Oral Lesions There are a large variety of lesions that can develop in a patient's mouth. From minor sores to large ulcerations, from small bumps to large growths, or various discolorations of the tissues, your patient will want to know what it is. Oral and maxillofacial surgeons are specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of all types of oral lesions. When a patient is referred for evaluation of a lesion, several steps must be taken to obtain a proper diagnosis. First, the patient's medical history is reviewed and a history of the lesion is taken. This is followed by a thorough head and neck examination. Many times a diagnosis can then be made and no additional treatment is necessary. There are times, however, when surgery is necessary. There can be growths present on the lips, gums, cheek, tongue or palate that get in the way of normal functioning or pose esthetic concerns. There can be suspicious lesions (usually white or red patches or ulcerations) that have the potential of being cancerous. In these cases, surgery is necessary. When indicated, surgery for the removal or diagnosis of a lesion is performed in the office. Most of the time local anesthesia is adequate for the procedure. Intravenous sedation can be used for more extensive procedures, if the patient desires. All specimens are sent to an oral pathology laboratory for diagnosis, and a copy of the report is forwarded to the referring doctor.
